October 26 Update

By Mark Messman

Superintendent, EV-W Schools

Building Project:

Our secondary school construction project continues to progress as expected. The sheetrock walls in the office complex are nearly complete, the gym slab has been poured, and excavation on the south parking lot has concluded. The main entrances on the north and south, as well as the ramps leading down to the gym floor will be poured in the near future. If weather permits, we'll have parking lot curbs and sidewalks completed by the end of the week.

We continue to see progress in the performing arts area and stage. Contractors are confirming the details and specifications for the lift system, while our team of educators works with audio and lighting experts. We've established a time-frame to have the stage opening, flooring, and electrical completed so we can install protective padding on the corners in preparation for the winter sports season.

Please stop in for a visit with your questions and comments, and be sure to exercise caution when you're in the proximity of the construction zone.

Celebrate EV-W Schools:

The Minnesota Department of Education has recognized EV-W schools as Celebration Eligible. Schools that have earned the Celebration Eligible designation based on the 2012 MMR/MCA results may apply for the MDE CELEBRATION SCHOOLS AWARD. This award recognizes the accomplishments and hard work of our paraprofessionals, teachers, and administrators working with students and Title I programming. The purpose of the MDE CELEBRATION SCHOOL AWARD is to identify Minnesota Title I schools that have demonstrated both excellence on the new Multiple Measurement Rating (MMR) which recognizes student proficiency, student growth, closure of the achievement gap, and graduation rates, as well as success with initiatives that have led to positive student outcomes.

I'd like to commend the EV-W students, staff, and community on your recognition as a Celebration Eligible School. Congratulations!

Teachers Honored:

It was a great pleasure to take part in the annual Leaders of Educational Excellence banquet held at the Rivers Edge Center in St. Cloud. Each year, St. Cloud Resource Training and Solutions sponsors the event to recognize outstanding educator performances throughout Minnesota. Please commend Carolyn Becher and Peg Plath for their service and recognition as LEEA (Leaders in Educational Excellence Award) recipients from the Eden Valley-Watkins School District. (See photo and story in next week's Eden Valley-Watkins News.)

Senior of the Week:

The EV-W School District would like to recognize Clarissa Roy, daughter of Greg and Lynn. Clarissa is a starter on the Eagles' volleyball team and also runs track. Clarissa devotes time each day volunteering with junior high and special needs students. She will team up with individuals and deliver the daily bulletin to various locations around the school. Clarissa is also a member of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, and also a mentor with the 21st Century after school programming. Congratulations!
