Semi driver found dead; child porn arrest; Rockville homicide, police shooting; local crime blotters

Driver of semi found dead Wed.

Wednesday, Oct. 17, at about 7 a.m. the Stearns County Sheriff's Office received a phone call from a witness saying that a semi truck that they were following southbound on CR 2 left the roadway. The witness said that the semi truck and trailer drove into a plowed field on the west side of CR 2 just north of 260th Street in St. Joseph Township.

The witness and the Cold Spring Police officer were able to help the semi driver out of the truck to start CPR. The identity of the driver will be withheld pending notification of family members.

The driver was taken to the

St. Cloud Hospital by Gold Cross Ambulance and was pronounced dead at the St. Cloud Hospital. Sheriff's Deputies were assisted by Cold Spring Police, MN State Troopers and the St. Joseph Rescue Squad.

Dassel man arrested for child pornography

Sheriff Jeff Norlin announced that Friday, Oct. 19, Meeker County Sheriff's Office Investigators arrested Nathan Charles Robert Schwartz, 23 years old, of Dassel. Schwartz was temporarily staying at South Geinitz Avenue in Litchfield, at the time of the arrest. Schwartz was arrested as part of an on-going criminal investigation into the possession and manufacturing of child pornography, first and second degree Criminal Sexual Contact with a minor who was known to him, and occurred over the past several years.

In September of 2012, a search warrant was executed at Schwartz's residence in rural Dassel, where various media evidence, drug paraphernalia and other physical evidence were recovered. The Sheriff's Office with the assistance of the MN Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCA) and the Forensic ICAC (Internet Crimes Against Children) Unit, recovered pictures and videos from the media evidence showing child pornography.

Additionally, photographic evidence was recovered showing Schwartz in possession of assault style rifles. Schwartz is currently a registered P.O.R. (predatory offender) and is a felon. Schwartz is being held on charges of first Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct, second Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct, Use of a Minor in Sexual Performance and Possession of Child Pornography. The investigation is ongoing and Sheriff Norlin expects additional charges to be filed.

Schwartz is currently being held in the Meeker County Jail awaiting his first court appearance.

Homicide in Rockville

Sunday, Oct. 21, at about

4 a.m., the Stearns County Sheriff's Office received the report of a man with a gun at 301 Broadwat Street East in Rockville. While deputies were in route to the call, further information came in that the man with the gun had shot another man and fled the area on foot. Officers arrived on scene and found the shooting victim near the intersection of Elm Street and 4th Street East. Rockville Fire and Rescue and Gold Ambulance also responded to the scene. The victim was treated at the scene, but died as a result of the gunshot wounds. Officers in the area continued to gather information on the suspect and the Stearns County SERT team along with K-9s from Sauk Rapids and the Benton County Sheriff's Office also responded to assist in the search. A search of the last known area and direction of travel was conducted for the suspect. During this time, deputies received information that the suspect was observed in the laundry room at 311 Elm Street, which is a four-unit apartment building.

The SERT team and other assisting officers surrounded the building and were in the process of making entry into the building. At this time, the suspect started to exit the rear of the apartment building while armed. Verbal commands were given and the suspect was wounded by gunfire. The suspect was treated on scene by Rockville Fire and Rescue and taken to the St. Cloud Hospital by Gold Cross Ambulance where he was lited in critical condition. He was then transferred to HCMC in Minneapolis. The Sheriff's Office requested assistance from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA). Investigators and Crimes Scene members responded to assist and process both crime scenes. The Cold Spring Police Department, the MN State Patrol, and the MN DNR also assisted at the scene. The shooting victim has been identified as Jeffrey Schutz of Rockville. The shooting suspect has been identified as Marcus Barshaw of Walker, Minn. The deputy involved in the shooting is a 6 and 1/2-year menber of the Stearns County Sheriff's Office, and is also a member of the SERT team. He has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard in these situations.

Wright Co. fatal accident

16 9:40 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, the Wright County Sheriff's Office received a report of a three-vehicle accident in the 8300 block of 10th Street NE (Co Rd 34) in the City of St Michael.

The initial investigation indicates that a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban being driven by Mary Jo Meyer-Buskey, 55 of Buffalo, was westbound on 10th St. NE

when it collided with a 1996 Volvo which was eastbound and being driven by Zachary Lee Jennings, 22 of

Plymouth. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

A third vehicle, a 1996 Volkswagen, being driven by Gretchen Root, 30 of Minneapolis, was eastbound on 10th St. NE and did not see the first two vehicles and collided with them. Root was transported to Buffalo Hospital by Allina Ambulance.

There were three passengers in the Suburban who were transported to local hospitals with injuries. They are identified as:

Jonathan Meyer, 41 of Alexandria; taken to North Memorial via Allina Ambulance

Kimberly Meyer, 54 of Alexandria; taken to Allina Hospital in Buffalo and then airlifted to North Memorial Hospital.

Sonja Sjolander, 38 of Buffalo, was taken to Allina Hospital in Buffalo via Allina Ambulance.

The St Michael and Hanover Fire Departments responded to the scene. The incident remains under investigation by the Wright County Sheriff's Office.

Oct. 15, Donovan David Mesker, 34 of Buffalo, was arrested in Buffalo on a Wright County warrant for fifth-degree controlled substance violation.

Oct. 16, Justin Edwin Warnke, 26 of Buffalo, was arrested in Buffalo on a Wright County warrant for probation violation.

Oct. 16, Taylor Robert Fieber, 21 of Buffalo, was arrested in Buffalo on a Wright County warrant for minor consumption.

Oct. 17, Jason Michael Mussehl, 42 of St. Paul, was arrested in Buffalo on a Wright County warrant for fifth-degree controlled substance violation.

Oct. 17, Paul Allan Dale, 22 of Maple Lake, was arrested in Buffalo on a MN Department of Corrections warrant for probation violation.

Oct. 17, Jesse Mark Miller, 31 of Buffalo, was arrested in Buffalo on the charge of felon in possession of a firearm and a MN Department of Corrections warrant for probation violation.

Oct. 18, Jorge Ruacho, 38 of Cokato, was arrested in Buffalo on a Wright County warrant for disturbing the peace.

Oct. 18, Michael David Stumpf, 26 of Maple Lake, was arrested in Maple Lake on the charge of felony domestic strangulation.

Oct. 18, Ronald Lynn Gotvaslee, 53 of Buffalo, was arrested in Rockford Township on a Wright County warrant for probation violation.

Oct.20, Tamara Lane Steinhofer, 48 of South Haven, was arrested in Southside Township on the charges of second-degree DWI and open bottle.

Oct. 20, Derek Roland Lindala, 40 of Annandale, was arrested in Southside Township on the charge of third-

degree DWI.

Oct. 20, Gregory Christopher Beauchamp, 51 of Buffalo, was arrested in Buffalo on the charge of contempt of court.

There were 24 property-damage accidents, 6 personal-injury accidents, 3 hit-and-run accidents, and 6 car-deer accidents.

There were 12 arrests for DWI,

2 underage-consumption arrests, and 38 tickets for miscellaneous traffic violations issued this week.

Sunday, October 21

12:21 a.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Eden Valley Rescue and Watkins Ambulance for a medical at a residence on State Street North, Eden Valley. One individual was transported to St. Cloud Hospital.

1:35 p.m. the Sheriff's Office assisted the public at a residence on 350th Street, Forest Prairie Township. Questions on child car seats were answered.

2:41 p.m. the Sheriff's Office received a 9-1-1 call from a residence on 732nd Avenue, North Kingston Township. A deputy responded and found all to be okay.

4:31 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a stalled vehicle on Pleasant Street, Dassel. The vehicle was blocking traffic and was towed from the scene. The driver, Clifford Donald Snabb, age 19, of St. Cloud, was arrested on a Carver County warrant for failure to appear.

6:23 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a cellular 9-1-1 hang-up call in the area of County State Aid Highway 30 and 393rd Street, Manannah Township. The deputy checked the area and found all to be okay.

7:29 p.m. the Sheriff's Office assisted an individual with putting them in contact with the MN State Patrol regarding a car/deer accident on MN Highway 55, Wright County.

Saturday, October 20

5:04 p.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Watkins Ambulance to a medical at a residence on County Road 21, Luxemburg Township, Stearns County. One individual was transported to the St. Cloud Hospital.

Friday, October 19

7:50 a.m. the Sheriff's Office received a report of a car/deer accident on County State Aid Highway 24, Dassel Township. No injuries were reported. A deer possession tag was issued a short time later.

1:52 p.m. the Sheriff's Office received a request to check the welfare of an individual at a residence on 675th Avenue, Forest Prairie Township. A deputy responded and found all to be okay.

10:56 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a request to check the welfare of an individual at a residence on Cedar Avenue South, Watkins. The deputy was canceled prior to contact being made as the person was found to be okay.

11:09 p.m. the Sheriff's Office observed an intoxicated individual at a residence on Church Street, Watkins. The deputy made contact with the individual who had help at the house.

2:43 p.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Eden Valley Rescue to a medical on County Road 34, Stearns County.

Wednesday, October 17

11:22 a.m. the Sheriff's Office took a report of a scam attempt at American Time and Signal, Dassel.

2:55 p.m. the Sheriff's Office took a report of a scam attempt at a residence on 380th Street, Forest Prairie Township.

9:38 p.m. the Sheriff's Office received a report of a suspicious vehicle in the area of Mies Outland on MN Highway 55, Watkins. The deputy spoke to the individual and everything was okay.

Tuesday, October 16

10:40 a.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Watkins Ambulance to a medical on Stearns County Road 21. One individual was transported to the Paynesville Hospital.

3:49 p.m. the Sheriff's Office received a driving complaint northbound on MN Highway 22, Manannah Township. The information was passed on to the MN State Patrol.

3:49 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a report of suspicious activity at a residence on 724th Avenue, Kingston. Upon the arrival of the deputy everything was found to be fine.

4:36 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a civil issue at a residence on Central Avenue North, Watkins. Upon arrival of the individual was advised it was a matter for the St. Cloud Police due to the location of the business.

6:37 p.m. the Sheriff's Office found an item in the area of 1st Street and Central Avenue, Watkins. The deputy will try to locate the owner of the item.

7:58 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to an unsafe condition in the area of MN Highway 55 and 587th Avenue, Manannah Township. The deputy removed the item from the roadway.

9:49 p.m. the Sheriff's Office took a report of an abandoned vehicle in the area of 300th Street and MN Highway 15, Kingston Township. The information was transferred to the MN State Patrol.

Monday, October 15

10:41 a.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Eden Valley Fire Department, Watkins Fire Department and contacted Stearns County to page Paynesville Fire Department for a hay shed on fire at an address on County Road 34, Eden Lake Township, Stearns County. The shed and 20 round bales were a total loss.

12:48 p.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Watkins Ambulance for a medical at a residence Elm Street North, Kimball. One individual was transported to the St Cloud Hospital.

2:02 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to and dispatched Watkins Ambulance for a medical at a residence on Shire Road North, Watkins. One individual was transported to the St.Cloud Hospital.

7:06 p.m. the Sheriff's Office took a report of a welfare check at a residence on Central Avenue North, Watkins. The deputy mediated the situation for the evening.

8:42 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to an injured deer complaint at a residence on County State Aid Highway 21, Kingston Township. The deputy put down the injured deer and issued a possession tag for the animal.
