The Eagles' volleyball team earned the fourth seed in the 5A West Tournament and will play host to sixth-seeded Swanville (7-13) Thursday night, Oct. 25.
EV-W (15-9 overall) finished the season with one of its best records in recent history. The winner of the game will face number two seed Upsala (23-5) Friday night in Upsala.
The Eagles feel that if they play their game, they should do well. The key may be to think positive. "We need to work on the mental aspects of our game," said senior Mikael Lies Thielen. "We can't get down on ourselves if we lose a point or a set."
Senior Holly Schumacher also believes confidence is a key. "We need to go into the big games thinking we're going to win," Schumacher said.
The team scrimmaged New London-Spicer Monday in preparation for the start of tournament play. "I thought we had some great blocking," senior Kaylee Forcier said. "We really need to play together."
The top half of the 5A West bracket includes EV-W, Swanville, Browerville, Menagha, Sebeka and Upsala. Sebeka, with a record of 16-9 is the number one seed. The lower bracket includes number one seed Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa at 22-7. Bertha-Hewitt is the second seed at 21-8. Other teams include Verndale, Osakis, Kimball and Eagle Valley.
The semifinal round will be played at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle High School Tuesday, Oct. 30, with the 5A West championship game at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in Pierz.
The West vs. East Championship game is at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, in Pierz.
