Weather column: The month of September ended just the way it began with temperatures above average. Surprisingly, as warm as it seemed, we were only about one degree above average in regards to our overall temperatures. Fairly cool nights helped bring down the average overall temperatures even with the warm daytime highs.
The average monthly temperature was nearly 60 degrees for the month in St. Cloud. The average daytime high was 75.5 degrees for the month of September. The average low was 43.6 degrees.
The real story for the month of September was our continued lack of rainfall. The month of September experienced just.24" of rainfall at St. Cloud. That was 3.22" of rainfall below normal for the month.
As a result of the lack of rainfall all spring and summer, Red Flag warnings were again posted Monday and Tuesday for the region because of the lack of rain along with the low humidity levels and breezy conditions. A good share of the state of Minnesota was impacted by these fire dangers around the state. Many fire departments were on high alert because of concerns of wildfires breaking out at anytime.
Some relief is insight, however, by the midweek with chances for rainfall along with cooler temperatures. At this stage, we could use a few days of heavy rain to help with our rainfall deficit.
It looks dry for the weekend with temperatures cooler than average. If you are going to a prep football game this weekend, take along a jacket. You will need it! However, the umbrella ... you can leave that at home.
Have a great weekend!
Weather history: This week in weather history temperatures across central and southern Minnesota were in the 80s. A cold front came through and "dropped the mercury to the 40's."
