The Kimball Cubs played the Pierz Pioneers Friday night,
Sept. 21. Kimball came in 3-0 on the season and Pierz was 2-1 in this match up. The game started out as defensive battle, as both offenses struggled to get points on the board. Pierz midway through the second quarter scored a touchdown for the only points in the first half. They took a 0-6 lead into halftime. Kimball's defense was shutting down Pierz's running game that turned out almost
500 yards rushing the week before. The Cubs offense was also struggling against the Pioneer defense and was shut out in the first for the first time in almost a year. The second half started out pretty much the same way as Pierz added a field goal to go up 0-9. But Kimball's defense got the Cubs on the board with a 61-yard interception return by Connor Wittenberg to close the score to 6-9 Pierz. That was all the closer the Cubs would get as Pierz added two very late touchdown runs to close the scoring at 6-22 Pierz.
The Cubs offense struggled to move the ball. Troy Filzen led all rushers for Kimball with
29 yards rushing. Cameron Hunt had 104 yards passing. Tim Konz led receivers with 3 catches for
40 yards. The defense which played by far it's best game of the year, was led by Konz who had
26 total tackles. Travis Wills was second with 17 total tackles. Wittenberg had the only turnover that Kimball forced with the "PICK6"
Kimball has another big matchup this week against the #6-ranked Maple Lake Irish. This is a huge game Friday, Sept. 28, for both teams for the race for the CMC crown. Would love for the stands at Kimball to be full of Blue and Gold for this game. GO CUBS!
