The Kimball Cubs 13U baseball team continued its great season by going 4-0 to win the AA USSSA state boys' tournament in Andover, Minn. this past weekend.
The boys started the tournament with a solid 8-5 victory over Osseo/Mapple Grove. The game was well-played with Kimball taking a nice lead, and then resting some arms to hopefully go deeper into the tournament.
Next up was a solid win over St. Paul Dunning 9-2, in which Kimball was showing signs of its offense coming to life. St. Paul Dunning is an all-star team comprised of St. Paul area players.
Championship Sunday brought St. Anthony to the table, with Kimball winning quite handily 16-6. The kids were playing aggressively and were excited about playing their way into the championship game.
The St. Paul all-star team upset the number one seed from their side of the bracket, which set up a rematch with Kimball for the state title.
The game was a seesaw affair, with Kimball coming out on top 11-10. Kimball received a strong pitching performance from Jordan Joseph, giving up 2 unearned runs in 5 innings, and a key 3-run home run from Troy Filzen. It was a great team victory, and one that the kids will never forget.
Offensive leaders for the weekend were Jordan Joseph 11-13 (.846 OBA), Troy Filzen 9-11 (.818 OBA), Ty Morrison 7-11 (.636 OBA), Chris Anderson 8-13 (.615 OBA), Jarred Merchant 5-11 (.455 OBA), and Joey Von Wahlde 4-11 (.364 OBA).
Pitching for the Cubs was handled by Joey Von Wahlde, Chris Anderson, Troy Filzen, and Jordan Joseph, with Joseph pitching 13 innings without giving up an earned run. The team played great defense with several players making key contributions. All of the kids contributed and grew in their love for baseball.
The team qualified for the USSSA 13U AA World Series which is a 6-day event in Omaha, Neb., July 12 through July 18. The team is currently making plans to attend this event and excited about representing Kimball and Minnesota.
The team is 10-0 in Gopher State league play and coached by Doug Joseph, Bob Merchant, Chad Spaulding, and Ben Knaus.
The coaches would like to thank the parents and fans for their wonderful suppor of these fine young men.
Our next home game is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 24, against Elk River at KAHS field number 3.
