Kimball Gold 12U softball team participated in the Crow River state qualifier tournament this past weekend held in Hutchinson. There were 17 teams that participated. It was a very hot weekend but the Kimball Gold team was on FIRE! We went into the tournament as the number seed and the team everyone was looking to beat. Our first game on Saturday was against Hutchinson Thunder. We came out a little slow, but managed to win the game. The next game was against a tough Dassel-Cokato team, and it was a back and forth battle which we ended up losing by the international tie-breaker. It was a tough loss, but it lit a fire in our team. We then had to play back to back games in the loser's bracket without any breaks in between games. The girls knew what they needed to do and we proceeded to beat Corcoran and Buffalo to be able to come back and play on Sunday. Sunday was a new day. We were refreshed and ready to play ball.
We started out on Sunday against a really good Brownton team who won the regular season West division. The girls hit the ball hard, and played well and came out on top of Brownton. We then had to play against the other 12U Kimball Blue team. We knew this game would not be easy for many reasons. These two teams have practiced all year together and are friends. Both the Kimball teams are very strong teams, and it was a difficult game to play knowing there was going to have to be a loser in this game. Kimball Gold came out as the winner. The two teams joined together after the game at the pitchers mound and did a huge cheer together of "WE'RE FROM KIMBALL, COULDN'T BE PROUDER." It was a very special moment, and showed the closeness of these two teams. Kimball Gold had more work to do, and went on to beat Dassel-Cokato, the team we had lost to on Saturday, to earn the girls the chance to play in the championship game. We came up against a very good Litchfield team and, even though we played hard and never gave up, we lost 11 to 2.
The team took second place and has qualified for the State Rec Tournament which will be held in Buffalo this next weekend. A special thanks to the parents of both the Kimball 12U softball teams for your continued support of the coaching staff and dedication to help your daughters learn to play the game of softball. Good luck to both teams in the State Tournament next weekend. Go Cubs! On behalf of Jamie, Whitney and myself we are proud to coach such a truly great group of young ladies.
