Eden Valley recently joined an army of governmental bodies, charitable organizations, agencies and businesses working together to help Armed Forces members and their families readjust to life at home after serving abroad.

Beyond the Yellow Ribbon program was spearheaded by the Minnesota National Guard in the wake of the 9/11 attack. The initiative creates a network to connect and coordinate resources to aid families of deployed service people, as well as supporting returning vets.

A proclamation, signed by Gov. Mark Dayton was presented to the Eden Valley city at the July 11 council meeting. Mayor Pete Korman accepted the proclamation on behalf of the city.

Meeker County signed up for Beyond the Yellow Ribbon in April 2011, and cities in the county were contacted. "When they called to see if we were interested, I told them most definitely," Mona Haag, Eden Valley city clerk said.

Beyond the Yellow Ribbon does not involve financial support from the communities, but instead looks for help with providing wide-ranging services, from making house repairs, to cooking a dinner, to mental health counseling. Volunteers must agree to provide a discount, product or service.

If anyone is willing to be a volunteer with the campaign, call the Meeker County Veterans Service Office at (320) 693-5445.
