Rockford armed robbery; fatalities; local crime blotters



Arrests made in Rockford armed robbery

Wright County Sheriff Joe Hagerty reports the arrests of two Rockford men stemming from an armed robbery Sunday, June 17, at Casey's Store in Rockford. Thanks to help from the community, the two men were arrested, broght to jail, and charged in Wright County Wednesday, June 20.

"We need the community's help in our public safety efforts and in this case, the community certainly rose to the occasion and provided information enabling our office to solve this serious crime." Rockford residents Charles Bentley, age 21, and Steven Keesling, age 18, were arrested and charged with robbery.

They remain in Wright County custody on $40,000 and $20,000 bail respectively. In addition to the robbery charge, Bentley has a felony fugitive from justice warrant out of Wisconsin.

Fatality on Little Cedar Island Lake

Friday, June 22, at just before 7 p.m., the Stearns County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a report of a body floating in the water on Little Cedar Island Lake in Wakefield Township in front of the address of 20684 Co. Rd. 71. When responders arrived, they pulled Connie Ann Kottke, age 71, of Buffalo Lake, from the water and performed CPR. Rescuers were unable to revive Kottke, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Kottke's body was sent to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office and the incident is still under investigation. The Stearns County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Chain of Lakes Fire and Rescue, Gold Cross Ambulance and the Sheriff's Office Water Patrol Unit.

Paraglider crash with injuries

Thursday, June 21, at about

9:13 p.m., the Stearns County Sheriff's Office, Melrose Fire Department, and the Melrose Ambulance were dispatched to a paraglider crash at

37228 County Road 13, in Milwood Township. The operator, Luke Olmscheid, age 23 of Melrose, fell to the ground and was injured. At the time he was about 50 feet off of the ground making an approach to land. Olmschied said that he turned, the wing folded, and he fell to the ground. Olmscheid was taken to the Melrose Hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The crash is still under investigation by the Sheriff's Office and the Federal Aviation Administration.

Wright County Sheriff's Office

June 19, Kamau Rashidi Rashen Powell, 27 of Clearwater, was arrested in Clearwater on Wright County warrant for domestic assault.

June 19, Steven Robert Keesling, 18 of Rockford, was arrested in Rockford on the charged of aggravated robbery.

June 19, Charles Robert Bentley, 21 of Rockford, was arrested in Rockford on the charge of aggravated robbery.

June 24, Dustin John Schlagel, 29 of Annandale, was arrested in Cokato on the charge of disorderly conduct.

June 24, Autumn Rain LaRocque, 19 of St. Cloud, was arrested in Silver Creek Township on the charge of third-degree DWI.

There was 1 arrest for DWI,

1 underage-consumption arrest, and 40 tickets for miscellaneous traffic violations issued this week.

Sunday, June 24

12:14 a.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Watkins Ambulance, per the request of Stearns County Sheriff's Office, for a medical at a residence on Hazel Avenue East, Kimball. Gold Cross Ambulance was dispatched soon after for mutual aid. One individual was transported to St. Cloud Hospital.

12:24 a.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to assist the Eden Valley Police Department with a report of a fight at the Valley Inn, Eden Valley. Shortly after, the Sheriff's Office dispatched Eden Valley Rescue and Watkins Ambulance for a medical resulting from the fight. One individual was treated at the scene.

2:28 a.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Watkins Ambulance, per the request of the Stearns County Sheriff's Office, for a medical at a residence on Powder Ridge Road, Maine Prairie Township. One individual was transported to St. Cloud Hospital.

2:39 a.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a report of suspicious activity near Faber Manufacturing, Watkins. The deputy made contact with two individuals and found all to be okay.

3:19 a.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Watkins Ambulance, per the request of the Stearns County Sheriff's Office, for a medical at a residence on Hidden Lane, Fairhaven Township. One individual was transported to Buffalo Hospital.

3:40 a.m. the Sheriff's Office received a report of a possible theft at the Valley Inn, Eden Valley. The caller and their information were transferred to the Stearns County Sheriff's Office, as the theft occurred in Stearns County.

6:48 a.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a suspicious male walking on Central Avenue, Eden Valley. A deputy located and checked the individual.

8:17 a.m. the Sheriff's Office observed an illegal dumping of a loveseat and recliner on Stearns Avenue, Eden Valley. Meeker County Highway Department was contacted to remove the items from the ditch.

10:36 a.m. the Sheriff's Office took a report on a theft that occurred at a residence on Brooks Street, Eden Valley.

4:14 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to an animal complaint on 710th Avenue, Kingston Township. A deputy located the owner of the cattle and advised the animals were loose.

5:39 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to and dispatched Dassel Fire/Rescue and Gold Cross Ambulance for a report of a property damage accident in the area of County State Aid Highway 21 and MN Highway 15, Kingston Township. Deputies assisted with traffic control while the vehicle was towed out of the ditch.

5:46 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a possible ordinance violation at a residence in the Watkins Trailer Park, Watkins. The deputy made contact with the parent and juvenile who were advised of city ordinances and use of BB guns.

6:59 p.m. the Sheriff's Office received a report of a possible civil issue at a residence on 750th Avenue, South Haven. The caller and their information were forwarded to the Wright County Sheriff's Office.

7:16 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a possible OFP violation at a residence on 725th Avenue, Kingston Township. The deputy made contact and determined that there was no violation taking place.

Saturday, June 23

3:26 a.m. the Sheriff's Office took a report of a domestic disturbance at a residence on Friedman Street, Eden Valley.

7:23 a.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Eden Valley Fire Department, per Stearns County Sheriff's Office, for mutual aid for a structure fire on Minnie Street, Paynesville.

10:15 a.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Eden Valley Rescue and Watkins Ambulance for a medical at a residence on Central Avenue, Eden Valley. One individual was transported to Meeker Memorial Hospital.

12:21 p.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Eden Valley Rescue and Watkins Ambulance, per Stearns County Sheriff's Office, for a medical on Green Acres Drive, Eden Lake Township. One individual was transported to the

St. Cloud Hospital.

6:44 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a stalled vehicle in the area of 325th Street and MN Highway 24, Kingston Township. The deputy made contact with the owner who was advised that the vehicle was a hazard and would need to be removed; the owner stated the vehicle would be towed.

7:45 p.m. the Sheriff's Office took a report of a theft at a residence in the Watkins Trailer Court, Watkins.

8:54 p.m. the Sheriff's Office observed a stalled motorcycle at the intersection of MN Highway 55 and 642nd Avenue, Forest Prairie Township. The deputy found no one in the area and the motorcycle was not a road hazard.

9:28 p.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Eden Valley Rescue and Watkins Ambulance, per the request of the Stearns County Sheriff's Office, for a medical at the Morning Star Resort, Eden Lake Township. One individual was transported to St Cloud Hospital.

10:33 p.m. the Sheriff's Office transferred a cellular 9-1-1 call to Wright County Sheriff's Office regarding stray horses in the area of 110th Street and Quist Avenue, Stockholm Township.

10:52 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to assist the Eden Valley Police Department with transporting an arrestee to the Meeker County Jail.

11:33 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to and dispatched Watkins Rescue and Ambulance for a medical at a residence in the Watkins Trailer Park, Watkins. One individual was transported to Meeker Memorial Hospital.

Friday, June 22

3:01 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a report of manure on the roadway on 642nd Avenue, Forest Prairie Township. A deputy located the responsible party and had the manure removed from the road.

8:34 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to an animal complaint on MN Highway 24, North Kingston Township. The owner of the calf was contacted and advised they would get it corralled.

Thursday, June 21

5:45 a.m. the Sheriff's Office took a report of a burglary at a residence on 5th Street North, Dassel.

6:38 a.m. the Sheriff's Office took a report of a burglary at a residence on 5th Street North, Dassel.

1:12 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a report of horses running on 365th Street, Forest Prairie Township. Prior to the arrival of the deputy the horses were secured back inside the fence.

1:26 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a report of threats at an address on 3rd Street South, Watkins.

10:41 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a disturbance at a residence on Glen Lane North, Watkins. Upon arrival of the deputies everything was found to be fine. The Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Eden Valley Police.

Wednesday, June 20

2:40 a.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to assist the Eden Valley Police Department with a domestic situation at the Valley Inn Bar on State Street North, Eden Valley.

3:03 a.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to assist the Eden Valley Police Department with a domestic situation at a residence on Bell Street, Eden Valley.

8:26 a.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Watkins Ambulance for a medical at an address on Church Street, Watkins. A short time later the ambulance was cancelled.

12:21 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a complaint of illegal dumping at an address on Central Avenue North, Watkins.

1:01 p.m. the Sheriff's Office took a report of a theft from a business on Atlantic Avenue West, Dassel.

3:30 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a theft from a residence at an address on 365th Street, Forest Prairie Township. Upon arrival the deputy determined a family member had borrowed the item and no theft had occurred.

Tuesday, June 19

2:11 a.m. the Sheriff's Office was on patrol in the Eden Valley area and stopped at a residence on Meeker Avenue West, after observing a fight in the yard at the residence. Citations were issued for possession of a small amount of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

12:54 p.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Watkins Ambulance and Eden Valley Rescue for a medical at an address on State Street North, Eden Valley. One individual was transported to St Cloud Hospital.

Monday, June 18

11:38 a.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to assist the Eden Valley Police Department with a domestic situation at a residence on Brooks Street South, Eden Valley.

1:14 p.m. the Sheriff's Office received information of criminal damage to property at a residence in the Watkins Trailer Park., Watkins.

6:34 p.m. the Sheriff's Office took a report of theft from a residence in the Watkins Trailer Park, Watkins.

8:52 p.m. the Sheriff's Office responded to a disturbance at a residence on 1st Street, Watkins. The deputy spoke to the individuals and the situation was mediated.

10:48 p.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Eden Valley Rescue to a medical at a residence in Stearns County on County Road 34, Eden Lake Township.

11:32 p.m. the Sheriff's Office dispatched Dassel Fire to for a carbon monoxide alarm at a residence on William Avenue East, Dassel. The Fire department determined that there was carbon monoxide in the home and advised to leave the residence for the night.
