The Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Crow River Conference, met Saturday, April 28, at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel for their Spring Gathering. The theme for the day was World Hunger and everyone attending brought items for the local food shelf.
After morning brunch, Pastor Steven Olson of Gethsemane gave morning devotions. Pastor Bryant Kaden, SWMN Synod World Hunger Chair, spoke about the many ways people can help in this effort. He also addressed the ELCA malaria initiative and the groups who hope to alleviate malaria in the world by 2015, a lofty goal.
One-half of the morning offering went to ELCA World Hunter and the other half to the SWMN Women of the ELCA.
Marion McCrory, president of the SWMN Synod Women, brought greetings and urged everyone to attend the 2012
W/ELCA Convention Friday,
June 15, at Faith Lutheran in Spicer, and Saturday, June 16, at Green Lake Bible Camp nearby.
The 18 churches in the Crow River Conference brought 240 Personal Care Kits for Lutheran World Relief to the Gathering.
An election of officers was held. Joyce Burgstaler of Ostmark Lutheran of rural Watkins was re-elected to another two-year term as president.
Women of the ELCA are celebrating the 25th anniversary of their organization. Ostmark Lutheran will host the fall women's gathering Saturday morning, Oct. 27, in which Rev. Herbert Chilstrom will be guest spearker.
Chilstrom was the first ELCA bishop, elected to his post at the church's constituting convention April 1987. He was re-elected to a four-year term at the 1991 ELCA Churchwide Assembly in Orlando, Fla. A Litchfield native, he is the former bishop of the Minnesota Synod of the Lutheran Church in America, one of the three church bodies which merged to form the ELCA Jan. 1, 1988.
