Kimball Speechers are off to a great start to the season! With three tournaments in the past 10 days, needless to say, students are getting in plenty of practice for the March eliminating tournaments and bringing home medals along the way. At Paynesville Saturday, Feb. 18, we faced the first of Final Round meets, where the top eight speakers meet for a fourth round with three judges. Participating in final rounds that day were Maicy Vossen, eighth-place Creative Expression; Jonathan Bisila, sixth-place Serious Drama; Alissa Jones, fifth-place Extemporaneous Reading; Olivia Straley, fifth-place Storytelling; Chelsey Maus, third-place Humorous; and Champion Shota Kuprava in Discussion; and Champion Katelyn Lichte in Extemporaneous Speaking.
Tuesday, Feb. 21, the team traveled to Willmar for an invitational that prides itself on giving lots of awards. Honorable Mentions were awarded to Tara Matthieson in Serious Poetry, Mitchel Hurrle and Caleb Anderson in Serious Drama, Olivia Straley in Storytelling, and Katelyn Lichte in Extemporaneous Speaking. Novice awards, given to first year speakers who receive high scores, were given to Katelyn Asfelt in Serious Poetry and Maicy Vossen in Creative Expression. Medals were awarded to first-through eighth-place, and receiving medals were Logan Bartholomew, seventh in Serious Drama; and Shota Kuprava, sixth in Discussion. Chelsey Maus, performing in both Serious Prose and Humorous, won second place in both categories, but it should be noted that she tied for first place in both categories.
Saturday, Feb. 24, was a quick jaunt to Maple Lake for a fun three rounds with some great results for Kimball speechers. Megan Bisila brought home her first ribbon this season in Serious Prose (eighth), and Olivia Straley took sixth in Storytelling. Katelyn Lichte placed fourth in Extemporaneous Speaking, and Logan Bartholomew placed third in Serious Drama. Blake Fox won a second-place ribbon in Extemporaneous Reading, and Chelsey Maus, with another double-entry week, placed third in Humorous, and was Champion in Serious Prose.
The team travels this week, Saturday, March 3, to Sauk Centre; the bus leaves at 6:45 a.m. Good luck, speechers!
