Kimball hosts Maple Lake
Kimball hosted the Maple Lake Irish in an important conference match up last Tuesday night, Jan. 10. The Lady Cubs have been playing well and even with some adversity mixed in it just seemed to be another night for this team to shine. Both teams were tied in the conference standings with a 2-1 record, so the winner of this contest would move closer to the top of the CMC.
As the game began, offensively Kimball was led by senior Mandy Wittenberg who scored our first six points. Senior Erin Dingmann and junior Breane Meierhofer each drained a triple, but the Irish were able to hang close on the scoreboard, 12-10 in favor of the Lady Cubs. The game see-sawed back and forth throughout the first half as Wittenberg, senior Brooke Merten, senior Emily Donnay and junior Casie Mackereth got into the offensive act converting big shots. To end the half, Meierhofer, Mackereth, Donnay and senior Samantha Stuve helped Kimball to hang on the a 32-28 halftime advantage.
The second half continued to be positive defensively for Kimball; and Meierhofer, Wittenberg, Merten and Casie Mackereth fueled us offensively with two-point baskets. Even though the Lady Cubs never led by more than five in the half, Maple Lake kept on making shots and would eventually take a five-point lead with 6:31 to go. Junior Allie Seth scored her only basket of the game, followed by a hoop by Wittenberg and then a big three pointer by Meierhofer to get us back the lead, 51-49. Wittenberg scored two more times, Casie Mackereth added a goal and Dingmann sealed the effort with two free throws to down the Irish, 59-51. We finished with a season low 11 turnovers as a team for the game. This was a very positive game played by our starters, regulars, and Casie Mackereth stepped up big off the bench. Breane Meierhofer led our team with six rebounds, Erin Dingmann handed out seven assists and Meierhofer added four steals.
Cubs lose to HL-W-W
On Friday Jan. 13, Kimball traveled to Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted to face the Lakers and, with a win, the Lady Cubs are tied for first in the CMC. Unfortunately for us, the "Friday the 13th" moniker rang true as the Lady Lakers caused fits for Kimball on the offensive end all night.
From the opening tap, the Lady Cubs were put on their heels with excellent three-point shooting by HL-W-W. They jumped out to a 5-0 lead on their first two possessions and a Breane Meierhofer free throw make at the 14:52 mark got us on the scoreboard. Mandy Wittenberg and Erin Dingmann each made a shot, but by this time, the Lady Lakers had rattled in two, two's and four straight three-point bombs to take a commanding 23-5 lead. Then Wittenberg and Casie Mackereth each added two, free-throw makes to help our offensive woes. Casie Mackereth drained a triple, Samantha Stuve made a jumper and Allie Seth knocked down a shot to end the Kimball scoring in favor of HL-W-W, 37-16.
As the second half started, Kimball traded baskets with the Lakers and specifically Wittenberg made her first four shots of this period. Brooke Merten hit a driving shot to the basket, Wittenberg scored again and Casie Mackereth drained two charity shots, but we still trailed 51-30. Kimball ended their scoring on the night with another Wittenberg score, a Dingmann driving lay in, a Stuve free throw and finally with an Emily Donnay post move basket. The Lady Cubs finished the game by playing solid defensive minutes as Raelynn Callander, Kenadi Mackereth, Paiten Schreiner, Hannah Zipoy and Kaylee Petty finished on the floor in a 64-39, Laker victory. Our team statistical leaders for this game were Mandy Wittenberg with nine rebounds, Erin Dingmann and Allie Seth each dished out three assists and Casie Mackereth had two steals. Our overall team record is now 7-4 and we are 3-2 in the Central Minnesota Conference.
Up next, Kimball is on the road again Tuesday Jan. 17, at St. John's with the tip off at 7:30 p.m. in Collegeville. We then host the Rockford Rockets Thursday, Jan. 19, at 7:30 p.m. for our annual "Parents Night". Then back out on the road Saturday, Jan. 21, to play the Eden Valley-Watkins Eagles in Eden Valley at 7:30 p.m. Thank you for supporting Kimball girls' basketball.
