The Kimball girls' basketball team began their season with two road wins and last Tuesday,
Dec. 6, we got our first chance to play in front of the home crowd. The ACGC Falcons were the opponent in the third game of the young season. Both teams played a very physical game, with the Lady Cubs eventually taming the Falcon defense with great decision-making on offense.
The game started slowly as junior Breane Meierhofer got Kimball on the board with the first basket of the contest. Senior Erin Dingmann added a three pointer, senior Rachel Arnold made three shots in a row and junior Allie Seth got a put back two to push the score to 13-5. ACGC started to double our post players and this allowed Kimball perimeter players to convert the open looks. Rachel would score again, senior Samantha Stuve got a breakaway steal for a lay up and Erin knocked down another triple off a great pass from senior Brooke Merten, to build the lead to 20-8. Our solid defensive play and a huge defensive rebound by senior Emily Donnay helped propel our offensive break. The scoring finished for Kimball on two Allie Seth lay ups to extend the halftime lead to fourteen, 31-17.
In the second half, fouls began to mount for both teams and the Lady Cubs took advantage to get to the free throw line, making 12 of 18. Senior Mandy Wittenberg, who helped fluster the ACGC defense in the first half by finding open Cubs, got into the scoring act, draining shots on three straight Kimball possessions, to lead 46-31. Rachel, Breane, Erin, Mandy, with juniors Paiten Schreiner and Kenadi Mackereth made free throws down the stretch to seal the victory for Kimball. Superb defense was played to end the game by juniors Hannah Zipoy, Casie Mackereth, Alissa Jones and Raelynn Callander as the clock hit zero, the final score was in favor of the Lady Cubs, 59-46. This was a complete team effort with four players in double figures to balance our offensive attack and consistent guard play that recognized weaknesses in the Falcon defense. Our team was led by Breane Meierhofer with 6 rebounds, four players (Brooke, Rachel, Breane and Samantha) each had 3 assists and two players (Rachel and Breane) forced 5 turnovers.
Last Friday, Dec. 9, the Lady Cubs traveled to Litchfield to play the Dragons in another non-conference matchup. Kimball started slowly but played hard throughout the game and the Dragons pushed the game tempo to their liking.
Both teams began the contest trying to establish their offensive strengths but three minutes into the game, the score was a conservative, 3-2 in favor of Litchfield. Rachel Arnold scored our first two points from the free-throw line, and the Lady Cubs spent the next five minutes without a point, until Brooke Merten scored to cut the Dragon lead to 12. Mandy Wittenberg's basket and Breane Meierhofer's two-and three-point makers finished the Kimball scoring for the half. Litchfield was able to energize its offense with quick passes up the floor for easy baskets and they knocked down contested shots also. The halftime lead was 33-11 for the Dragons.
The Lady Cubs spent the second half working hard for every opportunity they got. Rachel started our scoring with a single free throw, Mandy hit a shot, Allie Seth and Breane each made their two free throws. The point margin continued to be just too much for the Lady Cubs on this night. Mandy got another put back two, Rachel swished a jumper and Emily Donnay drained a basket on a nice pass from Erin Dingmann, Samantha Stuve had a steal that sparked us defensively, Mandy scored 13 in a row and Allie finished our scoring with a lay in, but it was far from enough as the Dragons cruised, 56-37. Team leader in rebounds was Mandy Wittenberg with 11, Brooke and Rachel each had three assists and Brooke grabbed five steals.
The Kimball girls' varsity basketball team is 3-1 overall and 0-0 in the CMC conference. We will take on the B-BE Jaguars on Tuesday, Dec. 13, in our CMC Conference opener at Kimball starting at 7:30 p.m. The team also plays the EV-W Eagles at home Friday,
