Wrestlers see the next level

The Cubs went into the Delano individual tournament as an underdog to one of the best teams in the nation in Apple Valley. We wrestled very well, placing in 11 of the 14 weight classes. Kimball had eight wrestlers in the finals, with seven of them facing an Apple Valley kid, the finals had some exciting matches with the Cubs coming up just short. Mitchell McKee lost a close match to Gannon Volk of Apple Valley by a decision 5-2. Tanner Mills lost by a decision to number-one ranked in triple A Seth Gross by a score of 8-3. Marcus Hamer lost to eighth-ranked in triple A Shamar Williams by a score of 5-3. Markus Mehr lost by a fall to Apple Valley's Cory Rathman. Quentin Bryce also lost by a fall to the second-ranked Mason Manville from Apple Valley. Jordan Joseph had an exciting match with number-one ranked Mark Hall, but came up on the losing end 6-1. Austin Schiefelbein lost by a major decision to Apple Valley's Paul Cheney by a score of 12-1. Alex Thurber lost in the finals by a fall to take home second place.

We had two extras that participated in the Varsity tournament and placed, they were:

The Cubs got to see what the next level looks like and can take this opportunity to sharpen their skills.

Next up for the Cubs will be a dual with Conference foe Holdingford on Tuesday, Dec. 13, and the Frazee tournament Saturday, Dec. 17. The Frazee tournament could be a preview of the class A state tournament with seven of the eight teams that will be participating ranked in their class. They include: Frazee ranked #2 in class A, Minneota ranked #4 in class A, Kimball ranked #5 in class A, Lake Crystal Welcome Memorial ranked #7 in class A, Border West ranked #11 in class A, Bemidji in the lean and mean in triple A, Perham is lean and mean in double A, and Brainerd finishes out the field for the tournament.

The wrestling action will start at 11 a.m. with Frazee facing Bemidji and LCWM facing off against Border West. Kimball will face Perham at 12:30 p.m. and Minneota will face off against Brainerd.
