The Kimball Cubs hosted the Paynesville Bulldogs Friday night, Dec. 2, at the Leo Wirth Gymnasium. The Cubs jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. However, Paynesville answered with a five-point run to recapture the lead at 5-4. The rest of the first half was about Paynesville turnovers (23 first half) and missed shots by Kimball (7/36 from the field, including 6/22 in the paint). At the break, the Bulldogs led 22-16 over the Cubs.
Both teams settled down a bit in the second half, with Paynesville holding the lead most of the way. With three and a half minutes to play, the Cubs trailed 41-33. Kimball went on an 8-0 run to tie the game with under two minutes to play. Trailing by two, Preston Peglow made a layup with five seconds left that sent the game into overtime. In the overtime session Kimball scored first on a free-throw, but Paynesville answered and went on to win by a score of 54-50.
The Cubs shot 27 percent (19/71) from the field for the game compared to 38 percent (21/55) for the Bulldogs. Paynesville out-rebounded Kimball by a 47-34 margin. The Cubs had 16 turnovers compared to 29 for the Bulldogs. Leading scorers for the Cubs were Aaron Laabs with 14 points and Jarred Merchant with 12. Cameron Hunt had eight steals. He also led in rebounds with seven. Austin Ruehle dished out five of the team's 10 assists. The loss puts the Cubs at 0-1 for the season. Their next game is at Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City Thursday night, Dec. 8.
