Minnesota hit with snow

By Mark Anthony,

KSAX-TV Chief Meteorologist

Parts of the state got hit with nearly a half foot of snow over the weekend, but once again most of "Greater Minnesota" was spared by the snow. Ellendale, in Steele County, received 5.5" of snow. Mapleton, in Blue Earth County, reported 5.5" of snow as well. Even parts of the Metro Area received heavy snow. Hastings reported 5.2" of snow. Woodbury and Edina both reported in the 3"-4" range for snow.

It certainly made for some tough travel in the Twin Cities area on Saturday. Thankfully, it wasn't during the actual workweek when things could have been even worse for commuters. That part of the state has had a couple of similar winter storms that have clipped southeastern Minnesota. This one impacted the Metro region a bit more as it tracked a bit further north.

This part of the state could certainly use some moisture. As we have talked about in previous weather columns, southwestern Minnesota is really, really with a drought situation. All of Greater Minnesota could use some snow to help with our moisture for this upcoming spring. All we can do is keep hoping ....

Have a great rest of the week!

Weather history: It was so warm during the fall and early winter in 1982 that "a farmer near St. Bonifacius bailed his fourth crop of alfalfa hay on this day."

Weather facts: Did you know that air pressure changes with altitude? When you move to a higher place air pressure decreases because there are fewer air molecules as you move higher in the sky.
