ELY-EVW did it again. This time it was the Legion team who won the championship game July 30, with the same members from the team that won the Class A State Tournament back in June. The team came into the tournament hot after making their way through regions and never looked back.
In the first game, EVW faced Marble and got strong hitting right off the bat. They were able to get five runs in the first inning and crushed Marble 14-6 with all nine starters receiving hits. In fact the hitting was so strong that Dan Sargent, Brendan Aston, Zach Schlangen, and Matt Geislinger all got home runs. Kevin Kramer was the winning pitcher
In the second game, EVW faced La Crescent, who won the Tier II Legion Championship last year and took second in the Class AA State Tournament this last June. EVW was once again able to come out swinging; scoring five runs in the first inning. They went on to win 10-4 with strong pitching from their ace Matt Geislinger. He pitched a complete game, giving up five hits and striking out eight.
In the championship game EVW faced Ely, the hometown team. The bats were again flying as EVW scored six runs in the first inning and kept that bats going. They won 15-3 in five innings, and received a strong pitching performance from Hayden Willner who allowed four hits, three earned runs, struck out one, and walked three. Matt Geislinger was voted the Outstanding Player of the tournament. He also received this award in 2009 and is the first player to win the award twice.
This is the baseball program's fourth title in two years. They won the Legion Tier II title in 2009 and have won the last two Class A state tournament titles. EVW advanced to the Central Plains Regionals in Viroqua, Wis. and play today (Aug. 4).
