Meeker Co. K-9 officer now certified
Sheriff Jeff Norlin is pleased to announce that The Meeker County Sheriff's Office K-9, a four-year-old German Shepherd named Titan, assigned to Deputy Reggie Sandstrom, certified at the 2011 United States Police Canine Association (USPCA) Region 18 PD1 trials. The trials were held in Woodbury, Monday and Tuesday, June 13-14. Approximately 64 Law Enforcement Agencies' K-9 teams attended from Minnesota and Wisconsin. All events were open to the public to watch. Certification consisted of several events including Article Search, Suspect Search, Agility, Obedience, Criminal Apprehension, and Criminal Apprehension Event with gunfire. The Meeker County K-9 (Titan) has been serving the citizens of Meeker County for little more than three years. Titan is a dual purpose K-9, so he is a patrol dog and a narcotic-detection dog as well. Titan also certifies each year in narcotic detection. He has assisted in narcotic searches at warrants, traffic stops, and going through the local high schools for random locker searches.
His role in patrol is in tracking suspects at the time of the incident, locating suspects in buildings and in apprehending suspects. Titan already has had more than a dozen narcotic finds. Titan and Deputy Sandstrom train on each of the areas weekly to maintain his certification. The Meeker County Sheriff's Office has a long tradition in the use of K-9's, going back more than 20 years when then "Deputy Norlin" was a K-9 Deputy. The Meeker County Sheriff's Office is proud of this tradition and to be continuing this service for the citizens of Meeker County. Sheriff Norlin adds that Deputy Sandstrom and Titan perform many demonstrations throughout the year and will be in a town near you again. They regularly give demonstrations during Meeker County's participation in National Night Out and are scheduled again later this summer in Grove City, Watkins, and the Dassel areas in addition to schools, and group requests.
