John Canfield Sr. of Fairhaven died Friday, June 24, 2011, at Hilltop Care Center in Watkins. He was 94.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 29, at Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel in Annandale with Pastor Steven Rowland officiating. Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, and one hour prior to the service Wednesday, both at Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel in Annandale. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 30, at Fair Haven Cemetery in Fair haven.
John William Francis Canfield Sr. was born May 1, 1917, in Ericson, Neb. to the late Palmer Levin and Mabel Pearl (Ainsworth) Canfield. He was the eldest of 12 children. He married Sarah Jane Lundy Oct. 2, 1937, in Knoxville, Iowa. John and Sarah had five children and lived in Lincoln Neb. for several years before moving to Minnesota in 1972. John was a carpenter and worked at Camp Friendship as the construction foreman; he built a number of the camp cabins and buildings. John and Sarah lived in Fair Haven for several years where John enjoyed maintaining a big garden and fishing in the area lakes.
John is preceded in death by his wife Sarah; parents; three sons John Jr., Howard Sr., and Henry; one grandson; four great-grandchildren; two brothers and five sister.
He is survived by his children Richard Sr., of Dallas, Texas, George Sr., "Butch" of Oxford, N.C., Joan (and Robert) Butler of Coleman, Fla.,; brothers and sisters George (and Madelynne) of Blackrick, Ohio, Bonnie Scott of Grand Island, Neb., Rex (and Blanche) of Grand Island, Neb., Eldon (and Phyllis) of Dannebrog, Neb.,; 18 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be his great-grandchildren. They were the light of his life! Carolyn Wicks will provide the music for the service. Memorials are preferred to Camp Friendship in Annandale or Hilltop Care Center in Watkins.
