The 2011 Star of the North Games has been selected by the U.S. Olympic Committee to host an Olympic Day event at the St. Cloud Summer Games and will feature three Midwest athletes with Olympic and International resume.
The Star of the North Games Olympic Day Event will be at
7 p.m. Saturday, June 25, in Halenbeck Hall Fitness Center at
St. Cloud State University. Olympic Day is a worldwide celebration of the values and ideals associated with the Olympic Movement. Olympic Day will host a free celebration for youth around the world to observe the Olympic values of fair play, perseverance, respect and sportsmanship. Members of the public are welcomed to attend and participate in an ice-cream social and a "meet-and-greet" session with the Olympic athletes.
Three confirmed guests for Olympic Day, so far, include Olympic Silver Medalist and three-time World Champion women's hockey star, Gigi Marvin; three-time Paralympic Archer Aaron Cross; and Minnesota Golden Gopher women's hockey player, Anne Schleper. Olympic Day is part of the Star of the North Games happening in St.Cloud June 17-19 and June 24-26.
The United States Olympic Day is the United States Olympic Committee's (USOC's) initiative to educate people about the Olympic Movement and inspire all Americans.
Meet the athletes:
Gigi Marvin is from Warroad, Minn., and played four years of hockey from 2005-2009 at the University of Minnesota. Marvin won the Silver medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games and is a four-time Gold medalist in the International Ice Hockey Federation World Women's Championships (IIHF). Marvin was part of the Media All-Star Team at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and received the 2010 USA Hockey Women's Player of the Year Award.
Aaron Cross is from Waterloo, Iowa, and currently lives in
St. Cloud. Cross is American archer who graduated from Augsburg College in Minneapolis in 1997. A world-class archer, Cross holds 15 U.S. National titles, five World titles and is a three-time U.S. Paralympian. Cross received a bronze medal in the 2004 Athens Paralympic Games and is a current part of Motivation on Wheels, a professional public speaking organization. Cross speaks about overcoming life's obstacles with focus and determination to groups of children and adults.
Anne Schleper is a St. Cloud native and will be at home when she returns to the Olympic Day event. Schleper is a current women's ice hockey player for the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Schleper was a member of the women's national ice hockey team at the 2011 IIHF Women's World Championship. Schleper was named to the 2010-11 WCHA First Team as well as the WCHA All-Academic Team and she has also received the 2011 Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award.
Olympic Day events are scheduled in all 50 states and it is expected that 350+ Olympic Day events will take place across the United States, most happening from June 17 to 26. The states for which State Games are sponsoring an Olympic Day event are: Alabama, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Carolina and Utah.
