Junior trackster Molly Hesse (EV-W) ran a personal best in the 800-meter run Saturday, June 11, to become the state's second best Class A 800-meter runner! Along with the second-place finish and a personal best of 2:18.53, she shattered the Eden Valley-Watkins school record by nearly 3 seconds. In order to qualify for finals, Molly had to be one of the top nine runners in preliminaries on Friday, June 10, where she ran a personal best of 2:21.49 to take the ninth (last) spot. On Saturday, she started strong and hung with the pack for a very fast first lap of 60 seconds. On the second lap, Molly was in sixth place with about 200 meters left when she began to pick it up. She quickly gained ground to be in third place with 100 meters left, but dropped back to fifth as other runners began to pick it up. With 75 meters left Molly kicked it in again, passing competitor after competitor until she finished in the second position! It was a phenomenal finish for an athlete that works hard every day and never gives up. Throughout the season, Molly has run the 800 six times, and recorded personal bests in each of her attempts. In the six races, she shaved nearly 20 seconds off of her time to become the state runner up. Molly finishes the season All-Conference, All-Section, and an All-State athlete. She also was Academic All-Conference and Academic All-State.
