St. John's Prep, Albany High School place in Area Envirothon

Teams from St. John's Preparatory and Albany High School received first-and third-place trophies at the MASWCD Area II Senior Envirothon competition held at the Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center in Spicer Wednesday, April 27.

The top three teams, St. John's Preparatory, Morris Area and Albany High School competed at the State Envirothon competition Monday, May 16, at Spirit Mountain in Duluth.

The Envirothon offers both in-class curriculum and hands-on field experiences. There are five environmental learning stations covering wetland/aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife, and a current environmental issue that changes each year. The current environmental issue for 2011 is "Fresh & Salt Water Estuaries". Each team of students visit the five learning stations and answer 25 hands-on questions relating to the station's topic. Students also give a 10-minute oral presentation on the current environmental topic to a panel of judges.

The Stearns County Soil and Water Conservation District sponsored the teams from St. John's Prep and Albany High School. The Area II Envirothon is hosted annually by the Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs) in Benton, Big Stone, Chippewa, Douglas, Kandiyohi, Meeker, Morrison, Pope, Stearns, Stevens, Swift, and Todd Counties.
