Wednesday, April 13, at about 5:25 p.m., the Stearns County Sheriff's Office received a complaint of an ATV being operated on the caller's private property in Saint Augusta. The caller stated that this was an ongoing problem and the Sheriff's Office had been called on several other times in the past because of ATVs trespassing on their property.
A deputy responded to the area and did see a 2004 Polaris 500 ATV driving on the caller's property. The deputy followed the ATV to a nearby residence and attempted to speak with the driver of the ATV. The driver went inside the residence and refused to come out and speak with the deputy. Instead, the driver stood behind his mother in the open door of the residence and shouted obscenities at the deputy.
When the deputy went to secure the ATV and impound it, the driver came out of the house and grabbed onto the ATV, yelled more obscenities, and attempted to keep the deputy from impounding the ATV. The deputy told the male that he was under arrest for obstructing the legal process and attempted to handcuff him. The male then ran from the deputy and at one point swung a patio chair at the deputy, striking him in the arm, causing a cut to the deputy's arm. The deputy continued to try to arrest the male when the driver's mother (Melody Kellen, age 43) came out of the house and attempted to keep the deputy from handcuffing the male. Other deputies arrived and assisted in arresting both people. The driver was identified as Ryan Timothy Kellen, age 18, and his mother as Melody Marie Kellen. Ryan Kellen was arrested for fourth-degree assault, obstructing the legal process, fleeing on foot and illegal ATV operation. Melody Kellen was arrested, booked and released for obstructing the legal process. Ryan Kellen was held in custody pending a complaint from the Stearns County Attorney's Office. The deputy did not require any medical attention for his injury.
