Company will proactively warn customers of potential tornado threats
It's that time of year when we're on the lookout for those most unwanted visitors of allÐtornados. American Family Insurance is providing its property insurance customers a free tornado alert service, the first of its kind in the insurance industry.
Through the tornado alert program, American Family Insurance customers can receive phone calls and e-mails when a tornado warning is issued in their area. Customers can enter up to three phone numbers and three e-mail addresses. When a tornado warning is issued, calls are made to the three submitted phone numbers. E-mails will be sent to all three e-mail addresses simultaneously.
The service is active 24 hours a day, with customers closest to the threatening storm called first.
"A few minutes or even a few seconds can make a world of difference when a tornado approaches," said American Family Insurance agent Tom Ehlinger. "We hope our customers make use of this terrific program to help protect themselves and their families."
This free service is available to American Family Insurance customers with homeowners, renters, farm/ranch, condo or mobile/manufactured home policies. Customers sign up for the service by going to www.amfamalerts.com or contacting their American Family agent.
In an average year, about 1,200 tornados are reported across the United States, according to the National Weather Service. Last year, Minnesota led the nation for the number of tornadoes with 113.
