The Stearns County Attorney's Office Monday, April 18, charged in Stearns County District Court 22-year-old Timothy Richard Gilles aka Ricky Gilles, DOB 3/24/89, with Fleeing a Police Officer in Motor Vehicle Resulting in Death. Bail was set at $1.5 Million without conditions and $750,000 with conditions.
On April 15, at approximately 4:59 p.m., officers of the Waite Park Police Department, the Stearns County Sheriff's Department, and the Central Minnesota Drug Task Force attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a Jeep Cherokee driven by Gilles at the intersection of Highway 15 and 2nd Street South, located in St. Cloud. Gilles was wanted for a felony warrant out of Wright County for Controlled Substance Crime in the Second Degree, as well as for probable cause arrest for Assault in the Second Degree and Fleeing Police in a Motor Vehicle, both of which stemmed from an April 6 incident in Wright County.
Two marked squad cars, with lights and sirens activated, attempted to stop the vehicle in a left hand turn lane of northbound Highway 15 at 2nd Street South. At the intersection of Waite Avenue and 2nd Street South, the fleeing vehicle ran a red light at a high rate of speed and struck a vehicle travelling southbound on Waite Avenue, killing the 30-year-old male driver and substantially injuring the 22-year-old pregnant female passenger.
After the suspect collided with the victim's car, he fled officers on foot south of the location where, after being tased by the pursuing officer, he was taken into custody.
Giles was taken to the hospital where he received treatment for minor injuries from the collision and was subsequently taken to the Stearns County Jail where he is being held on the active warrant, the probable cause pick up and hold incident from Wright County, and for charges in this incident of criminal vehicuylar homicide.
The 30-year-old man struck by Gilles was Timothy Martin Casanova from Starbuck. Casanova died at the scene of his injuries. The passenger was identified as Megan Irene Thomsen, 22 years old from Glenwood. As of Monday, April 18, Thomsen remains hospitalized at the St. Cloud Hospital. Her baby was delivered by emergency C-section and remains hospitalized at the St. Cloud Hospital also.
Investigation continues and additional charges may be filed at a later date.
