Powered by three hours of sleep, the Kimball Cubs basketball team, going by the name of the Flint Tropics, traveled to Pierz and won the 3-on-3 tournament. This team, which consisted of Ty Filzen, Neil Helgeson, Dillon Menson, and Brett Ostby, attended their senior prom Saturday night, April 2, and then went to Pierz the next Sunday morning and claimed the first-place trophies. They have been attending this tournament since fifth grade and they saved the best for last with their first championship. The team got off to a slow and sleepy start as they went 2 and 2 in pool play with wins over Staples-Motley and Long Prairie and losses to Swanville and Pierz. They ended up fourth out of seven teams for bracket play and saved their best basketball for when they needed it most.
The first game, they handily beat Swanville to avenge their pool-play loss. Then they went up against the undefeated Pierz team who were led by Preston Weber and Caleb Jansen. Both these players made first team all-conference in the CMC and honorable mention all-area. Caleb was also the conference leader in rebounding and set a Pierz team record in rebounds for a single season. The Flint Tropics made many adjustments from their pool play loss of 23Ð6 to beat the Pierz team by three, and head to the championship game. In the trophy game, they beat the state tournament team of Long Prairie led by all-state player Cody Warner. The team took off right where they left the school ball season with Neil creating the offense, Dillon's inside game, the hustle and defense of Ty, and the outside shooting of Brett. The boys woke up from prom fatigue and stepped up in bracket play when they needed it the most. Congratulations boys on another great memory.
