Cubs close successful season

The Kimball Cubs basketball team traveled to St. Michael-Albertville Saturday, March 12, to take on the Zimmerman Thunder in the second round of Section 5AA Playoffs. Zimmerman came in as the top seed in the sub-section with Kimball being the fourth seed. The Cubs were looking for their second playoff win after defeating Legacy Christian Academy Thursday, March 10.

Zimmerman jumped out to an early lead on the Cubs by scoring some easy baskets in transition. Kimball answered by getting the ball inside to their center, Dillon Menson. The Cubs really tried to slow the pace of the game, and with five minutes left in the first half, a Brett Ostby three-pointer tied the score at 17 all. Zimmerman outscored Kimball by six the rest of the half and went into the locker room with a 27-21 lead.

In the second half, the Cubs cut the lead to three (31-28) with

13 minutes remaining. Zimmerman answered and built the lead back to 14, but Kimball would not back down. With 1:23 remaining on the clock, the Cubs cut the lead to nine at 61-52. Down the stretch, Zimmerman made some free throws and closed out a 69-52 victory.

Dillon Menson led the team in scoring and rebounding with

16 points and eight rebounds. Neil Helgeson and Cameron Hunt each had five assists. Hunt added three steals. Free-throws hurt the Cubs, as they made 15/25 from the charity stripe. Kimball finished the season with a record of 14 wins and 12 losses. The win total was the most since the 1999-2000 season when the Cubs recorded

15 wins.
