This coming Saturday morning, March 12, 26 buses will fill the parking lots at Kimball Area High School for the Empress Invitational, an annual speech contest that includes teams from Alexandria to Princeton to Le Seur-Henderson to Willmar. more than 500 students will be competing for top honors in 13 Minnesota State High School League categories, and this year, the Oscar-themed invitational will include first-place golden statuettes and acceptance speeches from champions. Medals are awarded to second through eighth place, with honorable mention certificates for those who score well. Trophies will be given to the top two teams in small, medium, and large team categories, with an honorable mention prize for third-place teams.
Kimball's speech team, coached by Jody Markgraf, looks to capture some "shinies" at their home tournament. And based on performances so far this season, they are in fine shape to do just that. Captains Chelsey Maus, junior in Humorous, and Tyler Dockery, sophomore in Creative Expression, have placed in four out of four meets; and sophomore Alissa Jones, Extemporaneous Reading, has placed in three out of three meets.
Other "Frequent Finalers" include sophomore Katelyn Lichte in Extemporaneous Speaking, sophomore Jonathan Bisila in Great Speeches, and freshmen Megan Bisila and McKenzie Libbesmeier, in Informative and Original Oratory. The team has taken two third-place honors at Paynesville in the large team category and this past Saturday as a medium team at Sauk Centre.
The speechers, coaches, and parents invite you to come watch some great public speaking this Saturday. The tournament is open and free to the public. The first round begins at 9 a.m.,
second at 10:15 a.m., and third at 11:30 a.m., with the Champion rounds beginning at approximately 1:30 PM and awards at 3:30 p.m. Come out and cheer on your Loquacious Cubs!
