Three-alarm fire destroys vacant building in South Haven

A vacant building (owned by Dolores Madden) on Oak Street, downtown South Haven, burned to the ground Saturday evening, March 5. South Haven, Annandale, and Kimball fire departments were called to the fire that required a good deal of water. A cause has not been determined, and it is not yet known how much damage was done to the adjoining two buildings: another vacant building, and the South Haven Post Office. The post office likely sustained smoke damage, and equipment was evacuated from the building to be set up temporarily in Annandale. No one was in any of the three buildings at the time the fire broke out, at around 4:45 this afternoon. Firefighters worked for hours containing the fire to the one building. Dozens of spectators gathered on the main street of downtown South Haven to watch and, true to this technological age, take photos with their cell phones.
