Last week the Kimball girls' basketball team played two home games, the first against St. John's Prep Monday, Feb. 14, and the second against Rockford Thursday, Feb. 17. Kimball handled
St. John's from the start, jumping out to a 29-7 halftime lead and finishing with a 62-23 victory. The mis-match led to many players performing well for the Cubs including Mandy Wittenberg leading all scorers and rebounders with 13 points and nine boards. Megan Garding followed closely behind with nine points and eight rebounds, while Shannon Donnay scored seven points and grabbed six rebounds. Natalie Stein scored six points and led the defense with four steals. Breanne Meierhofer also added six points followed by Liz Kastanek with four points, Klarissa Eisenbraun four points, Rachel Arnold three points, Erin Dingmann three points, Sam Stuve three points, Brooke Merten two points, and Kayla Overland two points. Merten lead the team in assists with seven.
Kimball again started hot in a CMC matchup versus Rockford, jumping out to a 30-10 lead in the game's first 12 minutes. Kimball led 54-38 with seven and a half minutes play and held on as the Rockets made a late push to close the lead to as close as six points, as Kimball won 60-54. Kimball shot 40 free throws on the night, making 27 of them (68 percent). Rachel Arnold and Megan Garding each scored 20 points for Kimball, followed by Kastanek with eight, Wittenberg with seven, Stein six, Merten three, and Eisenbraun one. Garding led in rebounding with seven, Arnold and Stein both led in assists with six each, while Stein had four steals and Arnold three steals. Kimball never trailed in both contests, as they closed out the two-win week in style, advancing their season record to 13-9 overall, 7-5 CMC. Next week, Kimball will end the regular season at home against B-B-E (senior night) on Friday,
Feb. 25. The section 5AA playoffs will begin on Thursday, March 3, when Kimball will play its first playoff game, opponent to be determined. Go Big Blue!
