Kimball hosted the Pioneers from Pierz last Tuesday evening, Jan. 18, in a Central Minnesota Conference game. The Pioneers jumped out quickly to a 6-0 advantage. The Cubs answered with a 13-0 run of their own to take the lead by seven (13-6). The rest of the half was played evenly as Kimball led 24-19 at the break.
In the second half, Pierz chipped away at the lead. With 3:24 remaining, they regained the lead by two. Behind some clutch shots from Cameron Hunt, Brett Ostby and Dillon Menson, the Cubs forged in front with less than a minute to play. With a two-point lead at 54-52, Neil Helgeson hit one of two free-throws to put the Cubs up by three. Pierz shot a three pointer that came up short and put in the rebound with 1.4 seconds left. The Cubs inbounded the ball and Cameron Hunt was fouled with.4 seconds to play. Hunt made one of two free-throws for the final margin of 56-54.
Neil Helgeson and Dillon Menson led the scoring attack for the Cubs with 14 and 12 points respectively. Helgeson hauled down seven rebounds and Cameron Hunt handed out six assists. The Cubs record now stands at seven wins and four losses.
