Cubs drop conference game to Rockets
The Kimball Cubs boys' basketball team traveled to Rockford last Friday night, Jan. 21, to take on the Rockets. The Cubs jumped out to an early lead behind the strong post play of Dillon Menson. Rockford's interior play gave Kimball problems of their own and allowed them to get back into the game. At the half, the teams were tied at 41.
The second half remained close. The Cubs found themselves ahead by one, 57-56, with five and a half minutes to play. Rockford retook the lead and was ahead by two with just over a minute remaining. The Cubs had to foul late in the game and the Rockets made their free-throws to post a 76-71 conference win over the Cubs.
The Cubs placed four scorers in double figures on the night, Menson (25), Neil Helgeson (14), Brett Ostby (12), and Cameron Hunt (11). Hunt also dished out nine assists. Dillon Menson led the rebounding effort with six. The Cubs are now 3-3 in Central Minnesota Conference play.
Cubs drop second in a row
This past Saturday, Jan. 22, the Cubs traveled to Norwood-Young America to take on the Raiders in a matinee game. Kimball started out slowly as NYA jumped to an early 11-4 lead. The Cubs tied it at 11 a few minutes later by pounding the ball inside to Seke Snead. The teams entered the half tied at 26 points apiece.
The teams went back and forth in the second half with the score remaining close. The Raiders increased their lead with about five minutes remaining. Again, the Cubs had to foul late in the game and the Raiders knocked down enough shots to post a 68-56 section win.
Neil Helgeson led the team in scoring with 22 points. Seke Snead and Dillon Menson added 12 and 10 points respectively. Helgeson added five assists and three steals. Cameron Hunt was the leading rebounder with 10. The Cubs now have a record of seven wins and six losses on the season.
