Girls' Cubs lose to Lakers, upset Rockets

The Kimball girls' basketball team began the week by hosting the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Lakers Tuesday, Jan. 11. The Lakers caught fire early as three quick three-pointers without a miss in the first three minutes helped give HL-W-W an 11-5 lead. The Lakers continued to put on a shooting display that the Cubs had no answers for. By the end of the contest, the Lakers cruised to a 78-53 win. This was the first time the Cubs defense allowed more than 60 points all season.

Kimball's leading scorer was Megan Garding with 17 points, followed by Mandy Wittenberg with nine points. Rachel Arnold would score eight points, Breanne Meierhofer five points, Sam Stuve three points, Klarissa Eisenbraun three points, Brooke Merten three points, Natalie Stein three points, and Erin Dingmann two points.

Friday, Jan. 14, the Cubs visited Rockford to take on the Rockets in another CMC matchup. The Rockets and Cubs battled evenly in the first half until Rockford methodically built an 11-point lead by halftime 33-22. In the second half, Kimball stepped up their defensive effort while reducing their turnovers, resulting in a 17-0 scoring run to begin the half. Rockford finally scored their first basket seven minutes and 17 seconds into the second frame to end the Cubs run. With Kimball turning the tide and building a 43-35 lead, Rockford fought back after Kimball went through a stretch of missing seven consecutive free throws. The lead would be cut to one point at 47-46 with just over a minute to play before Brooke Merten and Erin Dingmann took turns shooting two for two from the free-throw line in the final minute to ice the game and help secure a 53-46 road victory. Rachel Arnold and Brooke Merten led the defensive comeback charge with 10 and seven steals, respectively. Garding led in scoring with 14 points while grabbing six rebounds.

Arnold scored 13 points and five rebounds while Wittenberg had 12 points with seven rebounds. Dingmann finished with eight points, Merten four points and Shannon Donnay two points. Kimball's record moves to 6-4 on the season, 3-2 in the CMC. Next up, Kimball will host Pierz Thursday,
