Ridgewater College officially broke ground on Friday, May 22 on the Technical Instruction and Renovation Project to take place on the Willmar campus. Phase I of the project, which is now underway, is a $3.5 million construction and renovation job funded by the bonding bill passed during the 2008 legislative session.
This phase will accomplish four parts of the project: 1) a campus building addition to provide new instructional space for the Insurance Claim Representative program, Customized Training programs, and new classrooms, 2) infill and renovation to house the Electrician program and align it with a like program, 3) major reconstruction and upgrades of the HVAC systems that serve our Cosmetology program, and 4) demolition or removal of several 1950's vintage out-buildings. Phase 1 also includes schematic design for the total project so we are prepared to complete the final phase with legislative funding in 2010.
The final phase, or Phase II of the project, will renovate spaces for our Agriculture and Veterinary Technology programs, provide completely redesigned student services areas, create a new campus main entrance with a reconfigured drive and parking lot, remodel administrative services space, and remove obsolete and poor condition facilities.
In whole, the project will create new space (approx. 9,500 square feet), demolish obsolete and inefficient space (over 23,000 square feet), and significantly renovate existing spaces (approx. 77,000 square feet) to improve technical program areas and student support services areas. The new construction and renovation of existing spaces will not only improve program and classroom space, it will also address ventilation systems improvements, code and regulatory compliance, provide computer and telecommunications infrastructure, reduce deferred maintenance and upgrade mechanical and electrical systems. Most importantly, the additional laboratories and classrooms will mean our faculty and staff will be in spaces designed to help them educate and serve Ridgewater students.
