When the Kimball softball team took the field Monday, May 11, it marked the 1,000th interscholastic game for Kimball coach Gary Riess. Mr. Riess arrived in Kimball in 1976, and has been coaching a sport at the high school for 33 years. He was an assistant football coach from 1976 to 1997, during which there were 190 football games. He served as girls' basketball coach from 1979 to 1987, and then returned in 2006 to the present as the assistant coach. During those two stints as coach there were 227 basketball games played. In 1977 he served as an assistant baseball coach, and the following season started the Kimball fast-pitch softball program which he has coached up to the present season, for a total of 583 games. All told, between the three sports of football, basketball, and softball, he has coached 1,000 games.
There are many memories from those games and many athletes who have made them all possible. The games go on, for on Tuesday, the Cubs played a double-header at Holdingford, and games 1,001 and 1,002 became the next memories to add to the list.
