Doris Nelson of Thief River Falls, formerly of Kimball, died Friday, May 15, 2009, at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Red Lake Falls.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, with Reverend Terri Cuppett officiating. Visitation was one hour prior to the service.
Doris Mae Mackereth was born Aug. 17, 1934, in Kimball to Byran and Mae (Ellis) Mackereth. She attended school in Kimball and graduated from Kimball High School.
Doris married Orville Nelson Jan. 10, 1959 in Moorhead. The couple lived in Minneapolis until 1967, where Doris worked as a waitress for a time. They moved to Thief River Falls where they lived on a family farm. Doris worked at Northern Lights Bookstore in Thief River Falls, where she made many friends. The last three years she lived at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Red Lake Falls.
Doris enjoyed playing cards, Bingo, bowling, and listening to country-western music on the radio. She loved, most of all, spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and Royal Neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Glen, Dean, and Leslie Mackereth; one sister Alice Dammann; and granddaughter Ariel Lynne Johnsrud.
Doris is survived by her husband Orville; three daughters Jean Marquis (and R. Michael Reynolds) of Venice, Fla., Denise (and Roger) Johnsrud of St. Hilaire, Minn., and Patricia (and Walter) Maurer of Ridgecrest, Calif.; son Brad (and Darcy) nelson of Lakeville, Minn.; 12 grandchildren Dustin (and Kati Jo) Marquis; Jason, Brandon, Matthew, Rachael, and Holly Johnsrud; Timothy, Travis, and Brady Nelson; and Andrew, Alyssa, and Shane Maurer; one brother Robert (and Marsella) Mackereth of Annandale; and several nieces and nephews.
