Experience the legacy

Eight members of the Kimball FFA zipped up their blue corduroy jackets and joined the nearly 3,000 members at the 80th Minnesota State FFA Convention. The convention was held at the Twin Cities campuses of the University of Minnesota April 26-28. Sunday night, members took in the state talent show which featured musical, dance, and comedy acts from across the state including a duet from EV-W. Monday morning, FFA members competed in Career Development Events. Members earned their trip by qualifying in the regional contests. The horse-judging team of Ty Filzen , Megan Jones, Abby Borman and Melody Rose earned a bronze medal. Members judge halter and performance classes and give a set of oral reasons. The team is coached by Paul Filzen. The soils judging team of Kyle Messer, Jared Capes, and Burke Tagney spent the chilly morning on the U of M Golf Course evaluating soil types and textures, land slope, and giving planting and fertilizer recommendations. The team earned a bronze. Andrew Kieke competed as an individual in the Farm Business Management contest. In this contest, members evaluate a farm's financial and business standing, answer questions about the information, and make recommendations for the farm. Andrew ranked 80th in the contest, earning a bronze ribbon. Monday afternoon we interviewed with KDUZ radio. Then attended the annual awards program Monday night. Nessie Early, National FFA Secretary, challenged the congregation to take advantage of opportunities and make time for the things and people you really love. We also enjoyed performances by the State FFA Band and Choir, the presentation of the State Star Finalists, and 289 State FFA Degrees. Kimball FFA members will receive their awards at the Kimball FFA Banquet Wednesday, May 20, at the High School. All are welcome to help celebrate 70 years of the Kimball FFA.
