The 2009 Kimball fast-pitch season opened last week with three games on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Practice began March 9, and the team spent almost a month in the gym before weather permitted the competition to begin. Monday's opener was against Osakis, who were playing their second game of the season. Opening day nerves were apparent as the Cubs fell behind 7-0 after two innings. Kimball returns only two full-time starters from last year's team, so seven of the nine players were seeing their first significant playing time. After the rough start, the Cubs settled down and the last five innings saw Osakis add only one more run, while the Cubs got two runs from Beth Libbesmeier, and one from Melissa Hechtel to end the game with an 8-3 margin. Libbesmeier was 2-3 and Tesslynn Callander was 2-4 to lead the Kimball offense. HLW-W was the Tuesday opponent, and also the CMC opener. Again, the Cubs fell behind early with the Lakers taking a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning. The Cubs used four hits, a walk, and three Laker errors to tie the game 4-4. Callander, Megan Libbesmeier, Amy Massmann, and Cassandra Loch scored runs. The Cubs took a 5-4 lead in the fifth, when Callander singled and was driven in by Megan Libbesmeier's triple. The Lakers pounced in the sixth, using 2 walks, an error and a double to plate three runs and secure a 7-5 victory. Kendra Albers was 3-4, Kelsey Vigoren was 3-3, Callander was 2-4, and Megan Libbesmeier was 2-4 for Kimball. Thursday Rockford continued the trend of the week and jumped out to a 7-0 lead through three innings. Using six hits and two errors, they forged their lead. Kimball then started to chip away with Callander, Albers, and Kristen Kuechle scoring. Cassandra Loch and Albers scored next in the fifth, and the game was 7-5. Rockford scored once more and Albers added her third run of the game and the final score was 8-6 for Rockford. Albers was 3-4, Callander was 2-3, and Megan Libbesmeier was 1-2 with a double and 2 RBI. The Cubs face their busiest week of the season this week, with games at Maple Lake and St. John's Prep, and then a double-header with EV-W Thursday, and a Saturday tourney with Royalton and ACGC, for a total of six games in a week. This year's squad consists of seniors Kendra Albers, Cassandra Loch, and Amy Massmann. Juniors are Tesslynn Callander, Erin Gilpatrick, Melissa Hechtel, Melissa Konz, Kristin Kuechle, Beth Libbesmeier, Shantel Tschida, Kelsey Vigoren, and Abby Zoller. Freshman Megan Libbesmeier completes the varsity roster. Head coach is Gary Riess, JV is Eric Primus, Joe Stangle eighth grade, and Barry Strand seventh grade.
