A record 1,282 people turned out for this year's Kimball Firemen's Relief Association pancake breakfast. This was the thirty-second year of the event which is the primary fundraiser for our local volunteer fire department. They started running out of food, and had to make several trips to Knaus and Gohmann's; but no one left unfed. Besides a wonderful breakfast (not just pancakes, but Knaus sausage, French toast, and scrambled eggs), the fire department got to show off, for the first time, its latest acquisition: the 1948 International fire truck that was the department's very first new fire truck. The truck had been kept in storate for decades, and has now been fixed up to run beautifully. Watch for it in parades this summer! The proceeds from the annual breakfast go toward purchasing needed equipment for the fire department. Although most of the trucks and equipment is paid for with private donations, grants, and gambling proceeds, the breakfast money allows the department to buy a rescue boat, for instance. This year they plan to buy a second thermal-imaging camera which will allow firefighters to locate people inside a burning building when it's too smoky to see them.
