Olivia Salzl of Watkins died Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at the Hilltop Care Center in Watkins. She was 74. Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 14, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins, with Rev. John Brunner officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Olivia M. Salzl was born Sept. 14, 1934, at Lake Henry, in Stearns County, to Peter and Barbara (Mergen) Ludwig. She graduated from Paynesville High School, and received her Bachelor of Science degree from St. Cloud State University. Olivia was a dedicated teacher and had taught at Brookings County and Bruce, S.D., Spring Hill, St. Wendell and South Haven, Minn., and at St. Anthony Catholic School in Watkins for 23 years. She was also employed by Fingerhut in St. Cloud until her retirement about six years ago. Olivia married Leander Salzl June 8, 1959, at St. Margaret Catholic Church in Lake Henry. They resided in Waite Park before moving to Watkins in 1964. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins, and was active as a Eucharistic minister, and as a religious education teacher. She was also a member of the parish festival committee, and was involved with the cake walk and Bouja sales. Olivia was a member of the Catholic Aid Association, and served as an officer and delegate to the Catholic Aid Convention. She was also the secretary of the Minnesota Metal Craftsmen's Association and organized their conventions. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister and brother; brothers and sisters Celestine Ludwig, Peter A. Ludwig, Sr., Catherine Ludwig; sister-in-law Marilyn Ludwig, Lorraine Ludwig; brother-in-law Othmar Wuertz. Olivia is survived by her husband Leander Salzl of Watkins; children Dave Salzl of Fair Haven, Dan (and Beth) Salzl of Roseville; brothers and sisters Loretta Wuertz of Waite Park, Br. Robert Ludwig, CSC of Notre Dame, Ind., Mike (and Vonne) Ludwig of Melrose, Mary Ann (and James) Fasbender of Paynesville, Herb (and Theresa) Ludwig of Montrose, Florence Graham of Hopkins, Florentine (and LeRoy) Zipko of Maplewood, Anita (and John) Giuliani of Maplewood; sister-in-law Leona Wuertz (and Art) of Lake Henry. Music was provided by Kathy Pauls. Casket bearers were Dave Salzl, Dan Salzl, Beth Salzl, Herb Ludwig, Mike Ludwig, Dale Ludwig and Mark Ludwig. Arrangements were by the Ertl Funeral Home of Watkins.
