7th-grade boys' basketball finish second at CMC tourney

The seventh-grade boys' basketball team played in the annual Central Minnesota Junior High Basketball Tournament Saturday, Feb. 21, at Rockford High School. The Cubs first-round game found them facing EV/W. The Cubs were able to jump out to a quick 24-10 halftime lead and would win their first game of the day by a score of 40-14. The team's defensive play set the tone with solid rebounding and aggressiveness on the ball defense and team mates who were ready in the passing lanes to take advantage of any passes that they could get a hand on. The second round game put the Cubs against the Irish of Maple Lake. The Cubs again started fast and were able to keep the Irish off balance with both aggressive defense and smart offensive plays that gave the Cubs easy baskets off of back door cuts, and nice drives to the basket. The Cubs led at the half by a score of 19-11 and would close the game out with a score of 40-29. With the win, the Cubs would move on to the championship game. The championship game found the Cubs playing a tough team from BBE. The Cubs started slowly on both ends of the floor and saw BBE jump out to a half-time score of 27-8. We were feeling the effects of our two earlier games and didn't get the same intensity to start the game. The Cubs were able to regroup at half and come back with a renewed energy. The Cubs would win the second half in scoring, but were unable to make up the difference from the first half of the game losing by a score of 32-49. I am really proud of how the team played in this tournament. Six players playing three games in the course of six hours is a lot to ask. At the end of the day, the Cubs overall record stands at 7-5. The Cubs close out their season with a home game versus Rockford Thursday, Feb. 26. The team and I would like to thank all of the parents and fans for their support at all of our games this season. It's that kind of effort on everyone's part that makes us successful. Go Cubs!
