When and how to prune trees and shrubs is one of the biggest questions facing homeowners. Pruning is necessary to promote plant health and improve a woody plant's appearance, but if done at the wrong time or improperly, it can have a very negative effect on the plant. To provide information on proper pruning technique for trees and shrubs, the Benton County Master Gardeners are sponsoring a free pruning seminar at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, in the Community Room of Sauk Rapids City Hall, 115 Second Ave. N., Sauk Rapids. The presenter will be John Elton who is a master gardener and the landscape manager at St. John's University in Collegeville. John will use his experience as landscape manager and University of Minnesota research to inform his audience of the proper timing and procedure for pruning shade trees and fruit trees as well as ornamental trees and shrubs. This is a very timely seminar because our oak and elm trees must be pruned before April 1, and the recommended time to prune fruit trees in this area is during the month of March. Attend the seminar on Feb. 24, to learn the reasons why it is important to prune at this time of the year as well as the proper way to prune these trees and all the other woody plants in your yard.
