A Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) conservation officer and his K9 partner are being praised for their actions during the armed robbery of a pharmacy in Champlin Jan. 30. State Conservation Officer Todd Kanieski of Osseo, and his K9 partner, Saber, were in the vicinity of the robbery when notified by Hennepin County dispatch. Kanieski spotted a male matching the suspect's description drive past him. Kanieski and Saber followed the suspect until additional units could arrive to conduct a high-risk traffic stop. Police arrested the suspect, along with his handgun and stolen pharmaceuticals. The man later confessed to an additional armed robbery in the city of Maple Grove. "Conservation Officer Kanieski and Saber were instrumental in the arrest and capture of a suspect that posed a serious danger to the citizens of Champlin, Maple Grove and anywhere he decided to strike next," said David Schwarze, Champlin chief of police. Kanieski, a conservation officer since 2001, teamed up with Saber in 2004. The dog is trained to find fish, game, or anything a poacher would want to hide, but can act as a deterrent when needed.
