Eugene 'Gene' Schreiner, 76

Gene Schreiner of Watkins, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, at the Hilltop Care Center in Watkins. He was 76. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins with Fr. John Brunner officiating. Friends called from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the Ertl Funeral Home with a Rosary service at 4, and the American Legion service at 7:30. Burial was in the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery. Eugene "Gene" M. Schreiner was born Aug. 21, 1932, to Nicholas and Mary (Klein) Schreiner in Luxemburg Township, Stearns County. Gene farmed with his father for a few years prior to serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Mildred (Borman) Schoen Oct. 1, 1960, at St. Anthony Catholic church in Watkins. They resided in Watkins where Gene was employed as a carpenter, block-layer, and mason for Nistler Building and Supply for many years. He then worked on his own as long as he was able. His wife Mildred died Oct. 30, 1991. Gene was a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church and a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, serving as a former Chief Ranger. He also was a member of the Watkins Senior Citizens, the Watkins Legion Post 453, and the Watkins Sportsmen's Club. His hobbies included fishing and hunting, and he enjoyed playing cards and socializing. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and visiting with friends. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mildred, son Jack Schoen, son-in-law Pat Crowe, grandson Kevin Schoen, and sister and brother-in-law Arlene and Ray Huschle. He is survived by his children Betty (and Craig) Gorton of Albertville, Peggy (and Chuck) Shaw of Watkins, Evelyn (and John) Gagnon of Maple Lake, Charlie (and Rita) Schoen of Watkins, Willie (and Mickey) Schoen of Monticello, daughter-in-law Milly Schoen of St. Michael; 26 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters Jeanette (and LeRoy) Smoley of Eden Valley, Ken Schreiner of Paynesville, Harold (and Ardis) Schreiner of Watkins, Dave Schreiner of Watkins, Charlotte (and Ken) Vossen of Watkins, Carol (and Jim) Fuchs of Watkins; and many nieces and nephews. Music was by Mary Steit and the church choir. Casket bearers were Jeannie Belinsky, Dave Crowe, Mike Schoen, Mitch Gagnon, Bret Schoen, and Scott Schoen. Arrangements were by Ertl Funeral Home in Watkins.
