As of today, the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) has identified 18 schools and districts that have a total of 96.33 cases of recalled peanuts from the federal commodity program. Those numbers could change as MDE continues to receive information from Minnesota schools and districts. Correction: In earlier news releases sent to the media regarding the federal recall of peanuts from the federal commodity program, MDE misstated that there were "six 10 pound containers" in each case of peanuts sent to schools. In fact, each individual case actually weighs a total of 24 pounds. Background Last month, the Food and Drug Administration announced the expansion of the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) recall. The recall was expanded to peanut products manufactured from January 1, 2007, forward. The plant is currently closed. The USDA announced one truckload of roasted peanuts from Peanut Corporation of America was delivered for some Minnesota schools on Jan. 15, 2007. MDE immediately instructed impacted schools to pull that product from their shelves. Earlier this week, the USDA provided instructions on how schools should document and dispose of the product that has been recalled.
