Stearns county deputies were patrolling on snowmobiles Thursday, Feb. 5, in St. Augusta when they encountered four snowmobiles going northbound in the ditch.Note that it is a violation of Minn. law to travel in the ditch against traffic after sunset. Deputies followed the four going west along County Road 47 and they activated their emergency lights and sirens signalling the snowmobiles to stop. Three of the snowmobiles stopped, but one sped off on a 1996 Polaris Super Sport, with a deputy chasing him on his snowmobile. After a little less than a mile, the snowmobile stopped. The operator was identified as Christopher Wilson who was arrested. During the arrest, Wilson, age 19, handed the officer five small bags of a leafy substance believed to be marijuana. He also handed the officer four tablets, believed to be ecstasy. Wilson was taken to the Stearns County jail and is being held there on charges of fleeing an officer on a motor vehicle and fifth degree controlled substance. The three other males were cited for operating a snowmobile against traffic after sunset and were released.
