It's official. As of December 15, 2008, Ertl Hardware Hank in Watkins has new owners: Dave and Nancy Knutson. Dave is a former employee who worked for Ertl for more than four years before taking over. "I thought it was a chance for me to try something like this," Dave says. Dave retired from the Sprint phone company in 1990 and says he never thought about going into business, but decided to give it a try. The reason for the change in owners? Dave says former owner Tom Ertl thought it might be time for some change. He added Tom still owns another business, Ertl Funeral Home. Al "Hoopy" Huberty has worked for Ertl Hardware since Jan. 1, 1960, when they were located across the street from their current location. Hoopy says it was originally owned by Joe Ertl and then the five Ertl boys Al, Greg, Norbert, Fritz, and Ole. Al's son Tom became the recent Ertl Hardware owner. Hoopy says there were a lot of changes to the business over the years. He says they used to sell things like appliances, carpet, and linoleum. Today, the current owner Dave says they aren't planning on making any major changes as of now. He says they plan on eventually doing some remodeling, but as for now they are looking into increasing the giftware and card selections. "I just thought it would be fun," Dave says. "More changes will happen in years to come."
