Wow! Where have I been? October is almost half gone, and I'm behind again. Guess I'll see if I can catch up.
Ireland was the featured country this month. The Irish flag is equally divided between green, white and orange. Green represents the Catholics, the orange is for the Prostestants and the white in between is for the peace between them. The national flower is the shamrock. I have never thought of shamrocks as being flowers. The four-leaf clover is not a shamrock, but is considered to bring good luck, with the four-leaf variety being valued because of its rarity.
If you hear someone mention Emerald Island, would you know they are talking about Ireland. The name came about because of the country's beautiful green countryside. Yes, potatoes are a very popular food, and they grow well in Ireland's climate. One of their most famous meals is, of course, Irish Stew. The stew is made with mutton, potatoes and onions. Their favorite ways to eat potatoes are boiled or in pancakes. A meal of Irish Stew over buttermik biscuits; wearin' o' the greens salad and a really yummy Murphy's chocolate brownie was served. I passed a lot of compliments on to the cook. The diners who wore some sort of green put their names into a drawing and Anita and Audrey walked away with green prizes. An Old Irish Blessing May love and laughter light your days, and warm your heart and home. May good and faithful friends be yours, wherever you roam. May peace and plenty bless your words, with joy that long endures. May all life's passing seasons bring the best to you and yours. Oct. 29 is the annual "Bring a Friend to Apple Pie Day." This year, the 35th birthday of senior dining will be celebrated on the same day. We won't be serving birthday cake and pie. Instead of having a birthday party, so to speak, for the seniors, Senior Dining suggests the diners create "birthday kits" for our local food shelf. These "birthday kits" will be given to Food Shelf clients, as needed. Items needed for the kits are: cake mix, frosting (canned or box mixes), candles, sprinkles/
decorations, powdered drink mixes, nuts, mints, party invitations, birthday napkins
and plates, paper cupcake liners, party hats, bubbles, wrapping paper/tissue, gift bags, ribbons. Monetary contributions will also be accepted. Any questions can be directed to me at
(320) 398-2211, extension 13. Reservations for pie day are needed by Monday, Oct. 20. Reservations are limited to the first 50, so make your reservation now and don't forget to invite a friend. ********** The pharmacist arrives at work to find a frightened-looking man leaning against the wall. "What's wrong with him?" the pharmacist asks his clerk. "He wanted cough medicine, but I couldn't find any, so I gave him a laxative." "Laxatives won't cure a cough," yells the owner. "Sure they will. Look at him. He's afraid to cough." ********** 'Til next time ...
