The Kimball Cubs varsity volleyball team fought hard but lost 3-1 to a scrappy Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted team on Thursday, Oct. 2. The Lakers were celebrating their parents' night, so the gym was packed with Laker fans and resonating Laker cheers.
In game one, the Cubs started slow, playing hesitantly, struggling to get their offense going. The Cubs were plagued by unforced hitting errors and net fouls. They lost game one 25-15. Kimball came back in game two, shaking off their cobwebs and started to move the ball around. They also started succeeding at serving spots, forcing Howard Lake to fall out of system in their attacking. Kimball won game two 25-15. Unforced errors as well as Lakers' blocking and tipping came back to haunt the Cubs in game three. Kimball struggled to gain any edge, but engaged in long rallies, which resulted in some exciting play. Unfortunately, the Cubs could not hang on and lost 22-25. Game four continued to be a tight race, as both teams battled back and forth trying to keep their own momentum going. At one point, Kimball was up 23-20, but the Lakers served tough and hit spots precisely. In a heartbreaker, Kimball lost game three 24-26. Match highlights include nine kills and 19 digs for Tesslyn Callander, 29 set assists, 14 digs, and three ace serves for Molly Hurrle, 13 kills for Rachel Lahr, and seven kills for Kelsi Woods. The Cubs are 9-5 on the season. Their conference record stands at two wins and three losses.
