On a beautiful day, perfect for cycling, Friday, Oct. 22, a small group biked from St. Gertrude's Church in Forest City to the Monastery of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, 30 miles up County Road 2. The group of men and women were pedal pilgrims who combine physical and spiritual exercise. On their way, they stopped for prayer at the churches they passed. With the wind at their backs, the pilgrims made wonderful time and spent an extra-long lunch break in Cold Spring before arriving in St. Joseph to join the Benedictine sisters for evening prayer and dinner. The sisters graciously welcomed the pilgrims and helped them find the right places in the monastery prayer books. A sister or two joined each table of pilgrims and their support drivers for dinner. For some, it was their first time in a monastery. Everyone, from drivers to the sisters, enjoyed being part of the pilgrimage.
The next pedal pilgrimage will be Aug. 15, 2011, and is open to people of all faith traditions.
